Best melatonin for timeshifting
Apart from light exposure and light avoidance, melatonin is the only thing that can shift your central circadian clock. Yet most people overlook light entirely, and they use the wrong type, dose, and timing of melatonin.
What is melatonin?
Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain. It is only released at night, controlled by your 24-hour circadian clock, which is why it is sometimes called the "hormone of darkness." In humans, melatonin opens the sleep gate and signals the brain that it is time to sleep. Melatonin is also available as a synthetic supplement — but in much higher doses than the body naturally produces.
Why most people use melatonin wrong
Melatonin is not a sleeping pill. It is a circadian signal. Taking it at the wrong time can shift the clock in the wrong direction. The type and dose also matter — the wrong formulation can stay in the system too long and confuse the clock rather than reset it. Most over-the-counter melatonin products are not designed for circadian shifting.
How to choose the best melatonin
Look for a low-dose (1–3 mg), fast-release, melatonin-only product. Avoid slow-release or extended-release formulas and higher doses: they may stay in your system too long and confuse the circadian clock. Skip blends that add other substances, such as valerian or St John’s wort.
Why melatonin quality varies
In the US, melatonin is sold as a dietary supplement, so its manufacture and sale are less controlled than for prescription drugs. One study comparing 31 melatonin products found the actual melatonin content ranged from 83% less to over 400% more than the label stated. Buy a melatonin-only product from a reputable pharmacy — many offer their own-label version. A fast-release pill is likely to give a more reliable dose than melatonin drinks or sprays.
Do tryptophan or cherry juice work like melatonin?
There’s no evidence that products high in tryptophan, from which melatonin is made, or foods containing melatonin, such as cherry juice, can help shift the circadian clock.
Can you buy melatonin without a prescription?
Melatonin is sold over the counter in the US and Canada, but in the UK and some other countries it is a prescription medicine. Check the rules where you live and where you travel. Whatever product you choose, ask your doctor about its safety, side effects, interactions, and warnings before use.
When to take melatonin
The right type and dose only help if you take melatonin at the right time — and the right time depends on why you’re taking it. See the guides below, or let Timeshifter time it for you.
