The best sleep mask for timeshifting

When Timeshifter tells you to sleep, staying in the dark is everything. Any sleep mask that blocks light reasonably well will do the job — but if you're going to buy one specifically for travel, night shifts, or recurring "avoid light" windows, here's what actually matters.

What to look for in a sleep mask

True blackout, including at the bridge of the nose. This is where most masks fail — a small gap at the nose lets a surprising amount of light through, and it lands directly on your retina. Look for masks with a contoured nose seal or sculpted nose bridge, not a flat band of fabric that relies on pressure to seal.

No contact with your eyes. Flat masks press on your eyelids, which gets uncomfortable within minutes and makes it hard to relax into sleep. Masks with raised, contoured eye cups keep the fabric off your eyes entirely, so you can blink freely and the mask disappears.

Stays in place when you move. Most masks slide around as you change positions, loosening the seal and letting light back in — often without waking you up enough to fix it. Look for adjustable straps and, ideally, eye cups that hold their position independently.

Breathable enough for long wear. A warm mask is fine for an hour. For a full sleep cycle on a flight or during a day-sleep recovery after a night shift, breathability matters more than people expect.

Our pick

Manta Sleep Mask

We have tested a lot of sleep masks for these criteria. The one we keep coming back to is the Manta PRO Sleep Mask — contoured eye cups, no pressure on the eyes, true blackout at the nose, and adjustable enough to hold position through the night. It's not the cheapest mask on the market, but for travelers and shift workers using one regularly, it's the one we recommend. If you want the same core design at a lower price point, the original Manta Sleep Mask delivers many of the same benefits.

Your choice

Timeshifter works perfectly with what you already have. No special gear required. These recommendations are for travelers and shift workers who want maximum comfort, darkness, and ease — nothing more. If the mask in your nightstand seals well and stays put, that's all you need.
