Some important tips before your first timeshift.

 

Your jet lag plan might seem complicated at first, but it’s actually easy to follow and very empowering. Below are a few tips that will help you timeshift for the first time.

Light exposure is key to shifting quickly.

 

In your jet lag plan, you'll find advice on light exposure and light avoidance, sleep, napping, melatonin (if you opted in), and caffeine (if you opted in), but the light exposure and light avoidance is the most important part. The time at which you see and avoid light determines whether your circadian clock shifts earlier or later, and is critical to timeshifting the clock quickly. Seeing light at the wrong time can shift you in the wrong direction, and make your jet lag worse.

You can avoid light everywhere.

 

Remember to pack good quality dark sunglasses, a sleep mask, and ear plugs in your carry-on bag. In fact, during timeshifting, always carry sunglasses with you. If you need to avoid light in the airport, on the plane, or when you're having lunch in the sun upon arrival, just put on your sunglasses. When you need to sleep or nap, use a sleep mask and ear plugs.

You can get exposed to light anywhere.

 

If you need to see light when you’re in a plane with all the lights turned off or inside a dimmed room upon arrival, just turn up the brightness on your screen/tablet, and turn on any available light.
